Aggie soccer vs. Santa Clara: Men earn first win, women lose tough battle
No. 10 Broncos use two late goals to stop UC Davis women
UC Davis soccer squads had mixed results in weekend action, with the Aggie men taking down Santa Clara, 2-1, Saturday evening, while the Aggie women dropped a 2-0 decision to Santa Clara Sunday afternoon.
Both games were contested at the UC Davis soccer field.
The men moved their record to 1-1-1 on the young season as senior Keegan Walwyn-Bent had two first half goals to give the Aggies a 2-0 lead they would not relinquish. Bent's goals came rapid-fire in the 18th and 21st minutes.
Junior Zack Lillington had an assist on both goals, while goalkeeper Noah Schwengeler had five saves to preserve the win.
For their efforts, Walwyn-Bent was named Big West Offensive Player of the Week and Schwengeler earned Big West Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Tyler Tipton had the lone goal for the Broncos with a first-half header to cut the count to 2-1 at half, but neither team could find the net after intermission.
With a win under their belts, the Aggie men will take on one of the nation's best when they travel to No. 4 Oregon State Sunday in Corvallis. The Beavers made it to the College Cup last season, collegiate soccer's version of the Final Four. UCD then heads to St. Mary's Sept. 12 before coming home Sept. 15 for a 4 p.m. showdown with the University of San Francisco.
The Aggie women meanwhile, thanks to a standout effort from goalkeeper Caeley Goldstein, battled No. 10 Santa Clara even for 80 minutes before the Broncos finally broke through with goals in the 81st and 83rd minutes.
Goldstein had a career-high nine saves before Santa Clara's late breakthrough. The Broncos, 5-1, consistently a national women's soccer power, have two national championships to their name, the last coming in 2020.
The Aggie women, now 3-2, hit the road this week for games at Eastern Washington Thursday and New Mexico State Sunday, before returning home Sept. 12 for a 5 p.m. non-conference battle with Utah Valley.
