Aggies cruise past Utah Tech for third straight win
Despite 32-14 win, there's work to be done as Big Sky play looms
The UC Davis Aggies learned a couple of things from their workmanlike 32-14 non-conference football win over Utah Tech Saturday night.
First, they need to figure out a way to score points in the red zone.
And second, when the offense bogs down deep in enemy territory, they do have a reliable field goal kicker in Hunter Ridley.
The win, before an enthusiastic overflow crowd of 14,832 at UC Davis Health Stadium, pushes No. 12 UCD's record to 3-1 as the Aggies look ahead to Saturday's Big Sky Conference opener against No. 4 Idaho in Davis. Idaho moved to 3-1 on the year after holding off Abilene Christian, 27-24.
Utah Tech is now 0-4.
"Our offense has to be better for us to really compete in the conference, which I think is the best in the country," said Aggie head coach Tim Plough, even though the final outcome was never in doubt.
"When we get in the red zone, we need to be scoring touchdowns instead of kicking field goals. But it is great to know that we have a great kicker, because some games will likely come down to that."
Ridley had first half field goals from 19, 27, 34 and 25 yards to tie the school record of four in a game shared by seven others over the years.
