Aggies look promising as they run through first football scrimmage of camp
Tim Plough pleased with progress, but says there's still work to be done
An old song opens with the lyrics "It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas," but in the dog days of August at UC Davis, it's beginning to look a lot like football.
The Aggies, ranked No. 17 in the Football Championship Subdivision Coaches' poll, ran through their first scrimmage of fall camp as they look ahead to their challenging season opener August 31 (2 p.m.) with the California Golden Bears in historic Memorial Stadium located in the Berkeley campus' famed Strawberry Canyon.
"This was our first opportunity to get out and play a scrimmage,” said first-year head coach Tim Plough.
“There were a lot of positives, including the defense tackling well and the offense creating explosive plays. I think our team is growing and I like where we’re at right now, but we are not where we want to be by any means. So, we will continue to have a good trajectory through the remainder of camp.”
College football teams generally spend the first several weeks of fall camp working on basics and getting newcomers used to the rigorous routine before beginning to focus on a specific opponent. The Aggies opened camp July 31.
