Aggies rally for miracle win on final play of the game
Hastings to Tompkins TD pass seals the deal over Portland State
HILLSBORO, Oregon - In one of most dramatic wins in UC Davis football history, Miles Hastings hit Trent Tompkins with a 9-yard touchdown pass as time expired to give the Aggies a stunning 27-26 Big Sky Conference win over Portland State Saturday afternoon in Hillsboro Stadium.
The win, the fifth in a row for the No. 8 Aggies, moves UCD to 5-1, while the hard-luck Vikings drop to 0-5.
The Aggies never led at any point in the game prior to the Hastings-Tompkins connection, with the final play starting at 0:01 and the winning catch occurring four or five seconds after the clock showed 0:00.
On the previous play from the PSU 9, the clock showed 0:05 and Hastings nearly hit C.J. Hutton at the back of the end zone, but the play was broken up and the clock showed no time left.
The officials quickly and correctly put one second back on the clock, allowing for one final play that allowed for Hastings and Tompkins to work their magic.
"I knew when they gave us that second back that we were going to score," said Tompkins afterward.
