Aggies survive difficult road test in dramatic fashion
David Meyer's interception seals the deal in 24-21 win over Southern Utah
CEDAR CITY, Utah - Aggie linebacker David Meyer stepped in front of a pass by Southern Utah quarterback Bronson Barron with 25 seconds remaining and that interception preserved a tense 24-21 UC Davis victory over the Thunderbirds in a non-conference showdown Saturday night at Eccles Coliseum.
The win moves the No. 12 Aggies to 2-1 on the young season, while SUU drops to 1-2.
"We were just trusting what our defensive coaches were calling and playing our roles and we knew that eventually we'd be able to get one," said Meyer, who also had a game-ending pick-six earlier this year against Texas A&M-Commerce.
Southern Utah trailed, 24-14, entering the fourth quarter, but staged a furious rally to cut the margin to 24-21 and had one final chance to tie the game or take the lead after taking over at their own 12-yard-line following an Aggie punt with 1:53 remaining.
Bronson threw three straight incompletions and faced a 4th-and-10 before staying alive with a 10-yard strike for a first down and eventually moving the Thunderbirds to the Aggie 43 with 31 seconds left.
With the lively crowd of 5,013 anticipating a possible overtime, Meyer took matters into his own hands, quickly going down to the ground after his interception. One Aggie kneel-down later and the game was over.
