Each and every season there are games when a team displays its true character. We saw it from the Aggies on Saturday in one of the most exciting and joyous games I have seen in my 14 years following UC Davis Women’s basketball. It started on the perfect note with a brilliant performance of the Star Spangled Banner by January Karbowski, age 11. Had he been at courtside, Francis Scott Key would have remarked, “Now that’s what I’m talking about!” One important addition: the incredible Victoria Baker was also one of the pre-game honorees. Vic has been adding spark to this team for three years.
That team showed such resolve and grit Saturday afternoon.
Broadcaster Greg Wong, who has covered the women so well for a number of years, told me afterward that it was among the best Aggie performances he had ever seen.
As for Victoria Baker being accidentally left out of the mention, it's one of those human errors that has now been corrected. Completely inadvertent and thanks for pointing that out. She brings so much energy to the team. What a group this has been to cover.
As for the National Anthem, let's hope we see January again soon. What a voice. What a presence. What an inspiration.
