In defense of the Electoral College, the brainchild of the Founding Fathers
Will Measure Q pass of fail, will Donald or Kamala prevail?
Some final thoughts as we are dragged kicking and screaming into Election Day, 2024.
FOUNDING (FUMBLING) FATHERS ... I'd like to thank the authors of the United State Constitution who, in their ultimate wisdom, gave us a method of electing our president where the person getting the most votes is not necessarily the winner.
In their genius, the Founders came up with a clever system where just seven states control the outcome of the presidential election.
Think of the money both candidates saved by not having to campaign in all 50 states.
It may have taken this country 74 years to figure out that slavery was not okay and 131 years before women were allowed to vote, but the Founders had perfect wisdom right from the get-go when it comes to selecting our president.
MEASURING MEASURE Q ... If Measure Q fails, our city leaders will have no one to blame but themselves for deceptively trying to sell this thing as a "one percent" increase instead of the 100 percent increase that it actually is.
That, and the fact that the revenue raised would go into the General Fund instead of telling the voters specifically where the money would be used.
CITY EMPLOYEE BENEFITS ... In the Measure Q debate a lot was made of the incredible benefits City of Davis workers already receive.
Those of us who receive almost no benefits like these in the private sector are rightfully jealous, but that doesn't mean it's wrong for city workers to receive them.
I'm glad we pay our civil servants well and I have no complaints about the jobs they are doing.
I just wish we all had similar wages and benefits, not to mention job security.
