Living in Athens, Ga., is a lot like Davis. Both liberal college towns, except when it comes to the football team. The Dawgs, like the Southeastern Conference, is professional football. Coach Kirby Smart is the highest paid in the NCAA, if not the NFL, at $150 million for 10 years. The assistant coaches all make $1 million. The players? Not so much until recently.
When I first arrived in town, Todd Gurley was the star RB, who was then suspended for four games after it was disclosed he had signed memorabilia for $1,500. Years before, WR AJ Green was forced to publicly apologize to Dawg Nation for trading a bowl game jersey for a tattoo.
The football team 10 years ago generated about $40 million annually in revenue. And this was before the arrival of Coach Smart, back-to-back national championships and not laying down for Alabama anymore.
Bottom line: College players in the big money sports like FBS football and Div. 1 basketball should be compensated relative to their school's athletic programs. To not pay them is pure exploitation.
Just don’t unwittingly get lured into one of those Die Hard “hostage/greenmail” schemes or you’ll likely be faced with the authorities having to call in Detective John McLane of the NYPD…and that will result in all manner of unanticipated “special effects!”
I just hope all are paid the same! If any team member receives more than their teammates-- it could create individualism vs team work. (We see this already too much corruption by advertisers and patrons. We also need to consider paying band members, cheerleaders, debate team members, and other teams...or redefine the concept of collegiate vs professionalism. Maybe coaches salaries as advisers, motivators, and planners should be lowered and more equitable at similar schools too. Maybe all student fans could have free admission.) All players need uniforms, food, books, housing, money for cell phones, computers, etc. We all talk these days about our common interests as players representing a campus community when playing on a team-- pay all of them equally to keep community-- what is a collegiate team supposed to be anyway?
You words about equity and fairness remind me of a man named Joe Singleton, your dad, who was a champion of anyone who wore the Blue and Gold. Blessings, dear friend.
Well it already hapened to the Olympics, I guess the Parks and Rec leagues are next to go.
You said it, Frank
Hope springs eternal and if you
live long enough you may prevail. Go Bob.
I plan to donate my share to charity
I'll settle for $10 million, throw a big party, and you're invited Karla
Thanks Bob. I see it is only modest compensation you are seeking - years of interest no doubt. What fun to have this experience even vicariously.
I'm ready to do battle for my fair share.

Coaches could transfer on a moment's notice and make millions.
Get your piece of the pie, Bob. Perhaps we can start a PAY Dunning fan club 😆
Now you're cookin' Bob.
Your Fan Club accepts kickbacks if they ever pay you, Bob !

Amen, Bill.
