Upset-minded Cal Poly comes to Davis for a Saturday showdown with the No. 6 Aggies
Former DHS superstar Paul Wulff is in his second year as Cal Poly head coach
Paul Wulff, one of the greatest football players ever to come out of Davis High School, returns to his hometown Saturday in his second year as head coach at Cal Poly.
Wulff's Cal Poly Mustangs will take on No. 6 UC Davis at 4 p.m. in UC Davis Health Stadium.
When he was hired at Cal Poly prior to the 2023 season, Wulff noted that "The position of head football coach at Cal Poly is one that I and my family have dreamed about for several years."
Wulff played collegiately at Washington State, then served eight seasons as head coach at Eastern Washington, where he was three times named as Big Sky Coach of the Year. He then was head coach at Washington State for four years. Since then he has had roles as an assistant at UC Davis (2019), Sacramento State and the San Francisco 49ers.
In his first campaign, Poly went 3-8, including a 31-13 setback to the Aggies, but the Mustangs appear to be more competitive at the midpoint of the 2024 season.
Poly brings a 2-3 overall mark, including 1-1 in Big Sky play, into Saturday's game.
The Mustangs drilled Northern Colorado, 28-7, two weeks ago and could have come to Davis tied for the league lead but for a late field goal last Saturday that gave Idaho State a 41-38 win over Poly.
Cal Poly is one of two "traditional" rivals that the Aggies face every season in Big Sky play. The other is Sacramento State.
